Reduced Carbon Footprint

Process for Carbon Management and Reducing Carbon Dioxide Emissions

Lovely Professional University is highly committed for the conservation of resources and pursuing sustainability through research, teaching, operating practices and capacity building. University has taken various initiatives to reduce the carbon emission by installing solar power plant and promoting green transport by using solar powered vehicles, bicycle, and e-rickshaw.

Bicycle used in campus

LPU adopted this eco-friendly system across the campus since January 2018 in collaboration with Hero Cycles. The success of this collaboration has made to be declared as the country's first bicycle-friendly University. Nearly 600 bicycles have been made available to students at the beginning along with 15+ stands across the campus which is shared by approximately 4000 students per day. University makes its students aware of pollution, unhealthy rides and traffic congestion through Hexi-bikes. Hexi PBS systems use automated systems of service, monitoring and tracking, and Smart Ape access for the students.

Potential of solar power Plant in MW
The reports determined that the combined emissions from scope 1 and scope 2 amount to nearly 3648 tonnes of CO2 equivalent for the 2022-23 session. Not only has the university lowered the total power use from the conventional resources, but it has also boosted the university’s renewable generation.
The energy transition towards low-carbon sources demonstrated a positive trend over the years 2021 to 2023. In 2021, energy production from low-carbon sources stood at 1.1 MW, indicating the modest beginnings of a more sustainable energy mix. By 2022, this figure increased significantly to 5.1 MW, reflecting growing investment and commitment to cleaner energy options. In 2023, the momentum continued, with a notable increase to 7.5 MW.
Energy used from Low carbon Sources
The share of energy generated from low-carbon sources experienced notable growth between 2020 and 2023. In 2020, these sources made up just 4.81% of the total energy generation. However, by 2021, there was a significant rise, with low-carbon sources contributing 24.64% to the energy mix, signaling a major shift toward cleaner energy. This upward trend persisted in 2022, reaching 25.85%, and continued to climb to 33.55% in 2023. These figures demonstrate a sustained commitment to reducing carbon emissions and transitioning to more sustainable, environmentally friendly energy production, highlighting a promising path toward a greener energy future.
Energy Consumption
Lovely Professional University has been making strides in energy efficiency, as seen by the significant decline in energy consumption per unit of floor area over recent years. In 2020, the consumption was 0.12 units per square foot or square meter, but this dropped drastically to 0.025 in 2021, showcasing substantial improvements. The trend continued into 2022, with a further reduction to 0.023, indicating ongoing efforts towards sustainability. Although there was a slight increase to 0.025 in 2023, the overall decrease reflects successful initiatives like enhanced insulation, upgraded HVAC systems, and adoption of renewable energy.
Newly installed Solar power plant in campus

These efforts align with the university's commitment to the sustainable development goals set by the United Nations. The installation of rooftop solar PV plants and the potential of 7.5 MW solar power plant further highlight the university's dedication to utilizing renewable energy sources and reducing its carbon footprint.

Battery Operated E-Rickshaw

Public Transport (e-Rickshaw):
Electric mobility has changed with rapid developments in energy and charging systems. As a milestone towards low cost and eco-friendly transport. University has opted this mode of shared fixed-route mobility for transport at reasonable prices. The e-rickshaw comprises of high-quality vehicles with advanced electric system, a fast-charging and long-range tech-enabled platform which connects students and drivers. This system has an intelligent route planning mechanism developed by Deepak Dhayal, a B. Tech. Mechanical student. 36 e-rickshaws and 10 golf karts running successfully inside the campus, supporting to keep the campus environment friendly and pollution-free. In this way, the university strives to combat the detrimental carbon-emitting conventional fuel vehicles and helping towards the improvement of air quality at the micro-level.

Creepers vertical greening strategies

Creepers vertical greening strategies:
The objectives for the green campus have been framed aligned with the national and international guidelines. Creepers vertical greening strategies have been adopted for saving energy and reduction of urban heat island effects.

Lovely Professional University is devoted to increasing the usage of clean energy sources and is now working on several small-scale sustainable power projects as well as extensively promoting green energy.
