Collaborations with PBR (People’s Biodiversity Register) for the conservation of biodiversity

LPU is working in collaborations with PBR (People’s Biodiversity Register) for the conservation of biodiversity. The PBR program urges the local communities to show reverence and maintain a record of its biodiversity. It includes efforts from the local residents to maintain, conserve, educate, innovate and adopt lifestyles which are crucial/important/healthy for the residing biodiversity. Further the program also encourages the local residents to disseminate its knowledge related to biodiversity management and innovation for the biodiversity proliferation at larger masses. This ambitious act aims to promote conservation, sustainable use and fair sharing of benefits of India's biodiversity resources, including habitats, cultivars, domesticated stocks and breeds of animals and micro-organisms. From this perspective, it provides establishment of a National Biodiversity Authority (NBA), State Biodiversity Boards (SBB) and Biodiversity Management Committees (BMC) at the level of Panchayats, Municipalities and City Corporations. The Biological Diversity Act was primarily designed as an umbrella act, and as a herald of a new age it would have overridden numerous older acts. As passed, howbeit, it stands as a complementary act and will have to be actuated simultaneously with array of other acts, including, in particular, those pertaining to forest, wild life, Panchayati Raj Institutions, plant varieties and farmers’ rights, and patents. Both complementary and potential conflicts must maneuver carefully in order to ensure that the Biological Diversity Act can effectively address all the significant challenges resulting from scientific and technological developments and from the growing strength of India's Panchayati Raj institutions.
