Guest lecture on Hymenopterans: Role in Achieving Agricultural Sustainability

On March 29, 2023, the School of Agriculture at LPU organized an online guest lecture titled “Hymenopterans: Role in Achieving Agricultural Sustainability,” delivered by Dr. Omprakash Navik, a Scientist at the ICAR-National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources (NBAII) in Bengaluru. The event attracted more than 100 participants from local/ national community and highlighted the significant contributions of Hymenopterans, a diverse group of insects that includes honeybees, ants, and wasps, to agricultural sustainability.
Dr. Navik explained the distinctive characteristics of Hymenoptera, such as their narrow "waist" and two membranous wings that can hook together when in flight. He discussed the importance of their well-developed ovipositors, which in higher forms are modified into stingers, allowing certain species to defend themselves. By emphasizing the ecological and economic benefits provided by Hymenopterans, the lecture underscored their crucial role in pollination, pest control, and overall agricultural health.
