LPU has taken significant strides toward sustainable water management, setting a standard for environmental stewardship on and off campus. To monitor water usage effectively, 32 digital water meters have been installed across bore wells, accurately measuring the volume of groundwater extracted. Powered by solar pumps, these systems enhance energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions associated with water extraction. The integration of digital water meters in each borehole ensures accurate tracking and promotes responsible water use. This advanced technology supports LPU’s mission to provide safe and clean drinking water to its entire community while prioritizing sustainability. To safeguard groundwater levels, the university also employs rainwater recharge structures, ensuring replenishment during rainfall. Through the use of gravity-based purification systems, rainwater is collected at elevated points, flowing freely without extra energy demands. LPU also explores modern water purification and reuse methods, including desalination and membrane-based filtration, harnessing solar energy for further eco-friendly practices.
LPU’s responsible approach to groundwater use is supported by government authorization from the Punjab Water Regulation and Development Authority, permitting up to 4,600 cubic meters of daily water extraction—sufficient for its expansive campus population of over 50,000. Despite this allowance, LPU extracts water conservatively, adhering strictly to the Department of Water Resources' guidelines under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India, to prevent any negative impact on the local water system. Piezometers are used to monitor groundwater extraction levels, and the university utilizes nano-membrane filtration, wastewater treatment, and treated water for agricultural purposes, demonstrating a holistic commitment to sustainable water management. Rainwater harvesting is integral to this mission, with the university following rigorous extraction protocols to ensure compliance, sustainability, and minimal environmental disruption, establishing LPU as a model of responsible water resource management.
The attached Annual Report provides an overview of Lovely Professional University's (LPU) sustainable water extraction practices, conducted under the strict guidelines set by the Central Ground Water Authority, Government of India. This report highlights LPU’s commitment to responsible water management, showcasing the campus as a model for sustainable resource utilization. The campus follows rigorous extraction and monitoring parameters, ensuring minimal environmental impact and alignment with government standards.
