Lovely Professional University and School of Agriculture conducted “Two-day Seminar cum workshop on Biochar- An alternative and sustainable method for stubble burning’ for farmers of the nearby villages on 02-03-2023 and 04-03-2023. This program is conducted with the support of an ongoing research project with Japan (Aakash Project, RIHN Japan). In this program, more than 40 farmers from different villages participated and got awareness about making biochar from different crop residues. Dr. Chandra Mohan emphasized the importance of biochar application in different crops and briefed about different biochar-making methods. They also guided farmers about the sustainable approaches for crop production also talked about the the potential of biochar-based amendments in biofertilizer production.

Department of Agronomy, School of Agriculture conducted an event named “Parthenium Awareness week”. Parthenium is poisonous, pernicious problematic, allergic and aggressive weed posing a serious threat to human beings and animals, so, it needs proper management. The main focus of the event was to spread awareness amongst the farmers, local people and students about one of the most notorious weeds Parthenium. Campaigning in the nearby villages adopted by LPU was scheduled in order to educate the farmers about various methods of controlling the weed. Approximately 150 students from the school participated in the event and had a wonderful exposure of the extension activity.

LPU students’ team got this prestigious grant under the ‘Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna – Remunerative Approaches for Agriculture and Allied Sector Rejuvenation (RKVY-RAFTAAR)’ scheme of the Ministry. Three students at the School of Agriculture under Lovely Professional University (LPU) have vowed to help one crore Indian farmers through their online venture- “Grow Your Farms”. Incubated at the LPU campus, their venture is providing end-to-end “agronomical advisory agricultural inputs solutions” at farmers’ doorstep. The purpose of the Agri-Business Incubator at LPU is to inspire, facilitate, mentor, and support young Indian agri-entrepreneurs with expertise, and know-how such that they attain sustainability, and become profitable companies. The innovative students shared: “We are prone to see incubation for serious agri-entrepreneurs and to further lead them to global success.”

A training programme on HACCP for BD Agro Foods was taken by Dr. Hamid Assistant Professor, Department of Food Technology and Nutrition, School of Agriculture, Lovely Professional University, Phagwara, Punjab (India). The main objective of the programme was to craft premium processed food by minimizing Agri-Wastage without compromising farm productivity. Training was given to 16 personnel of the company and also told them about different principles of HACCP and how team can be made under HACCP. Different outcomes they learned from the training programme.
  • Participants came to know about the role of principles of HACCP in assuring food safety.
  • Participants came to know about the various types of hazards, their prevention, prerequisite programs and role of implementation of HACCP in assuring food safety.
  • Participants came to know about the various aspects of CCP point identification practically in tomato paste processing plant and related to frozen products for assuring good quality of prepared product.
  • Participants gains the skills to drive implementation of HACCP in the organization.

The Workshop on ‘Skill Training of Rural Youth (STRY) program on Dehydrated fruits and vegetable processing’ organized by Food Technology and Nutrition, School of Agriculture, & Human Resource Development Center and Department in association with PAMETI Ludhiana. Dr. Sonia Morya, Assistant Professor, Department of Food Technology and Nutrition, School of Agriculture and Dr. Ravindra Kumar Tiwari Assistant Professor, Department of Food Technology and Nutrition, School of Agriculture were the resource person for this workshop. This skill based program outlines a training program focused on dehydrated fruits and vegetable processing. The program aims to educate participants on dehydration techniques, equipment operation, quality control, food safety, and market opportunities. By providing essential skills and knowledge, the program seeks to empower individuals to enter or enhance their businesses in the growing market of dehydrated food products.
